Alberta Retrofit Accelerator Program Partner SAIT hosted an indepth look at the challenges and successes in retrofitting the Edmonton Expo Centre. Retrofit Vendors Stok, CIMA+, SMP Engineering, Delnor Construction, and AltaPro Electric partnered with the City of Edmonton using Integrated Project Delivery.

As part of its ambitious sustainable building policies, the City of Edmonton has set a goal for all its existing buildings to be carbon neutral by 2050. As one of the City’s largest and most energy intensive facilities, the Edmonton EXPO Centre is undergoing a retrofit to improve its energy performance and support the City’s emissions neutral goals. The project team was tasked with utilizing the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) project delivery model to maximize value to the client in upgrading this facility.

The EXPO Centre hosts trade shows, concerts, conventions and other events. The original EXPO Centre halls (A through D) were constructed in 1983 and have not been updated since they opened.

The Project began with planning and design in spring 2021, and was followed by phased construction that started in fall 2021. This includes:

  • The installation of rooftop solar photovoltaics (solar PV) over Halls A through H
  • Hazardous materials abatement
  • Rehabilitation of the building envelope
  • Mechanical, electrical and structural upgrades to Halls A through D

Once complete, the solar PV array will generate around 4.3 gigawatt hours of energy per year, and is estimated to save the City up to $760,000 in energy costs per year.
