State of the AEEA

The Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance (AEEA) is a group of industry, municipal and non-profit organizations and associations working to maximize energy efficiency in the province.

Started in mid-2008, the Alliance currently has 20 members and is actively working on projects in the industrial, residential and non-residential sectors. Our second discussion paper was released in early 2010 as an opportunity for stakeholders to provide input prior to draft legislation on the Alberta Energy Efficiency Act.

The AEEA has also held speaking events featuring senior government officials and is compiling a database of announcements and publications related to energy efficiency in Alberta.

You can view our business plan and membership benefits and www.aeea.ca.

The AEEA:

  • Brings people together
  • Collects and shares ideas and news
  • Advances energy efficiency in Alberta

By working together, we all achieve more.

What's New

Alberta Energy Efficiency Act
The AEEA has recently released its newest discussion paper looking at potential energy efficiency legislation for the province. In its last Climate Change Strategy, the Government of Alberta indicated that it would ‘Develop an Energy Efficiency Act.’ This AEEA discussion paper identifies EE legislation used in other jurisdictions, and surveys members and other select organizations on their perspectives on each legislative option.

2010 – 2012 Business Plan
The board has approved the 2010-2012 business plan for the Alliance. Click here [PDF] to download the latest version of the AEEA business plan.

‘Unlocking Energy Efficiency’ Luncheon
On January 21st, members of McKinsey and Company presented on their landmark report Unlocking Energy Efficiency to over 60 attendees at an AEEA luncheon. The report shows that the United States could reduce energy demand by 23% and save $1.2 Trillion over the next 10 years on energy efficiency measures that have a positive return on investment. They also identified the reasons why we’re not taking full advantage of this opportunity currently and outlined a framework for how various barriers can be overcome.

Annual General Meeting
On May 13th, the AEEA had its 2nd Annual General Meeting. The members of the Alliance gathered to identify priorities for the upcoming year and host an 'open door' event. At the event, representatives from the Government of Alberta shared the government's plans for energy efficiency in the province. [click here for the presentation]

Alberta Announces Energy Efficiency Rebates
In April 2009, the Government of Alberta announced a new rebate program for Albertans. The program includes rebates for new homes, furnaces, washing machines, insulation, hot water heaters, home energy audits and hybrid taxis. [find out more]

Distributed Generation
On March 12th, Ontario unveiled North America’s first feed-in tariff – a guaranteed price for renewable energy placed onto the grid. This is expected to make it much easier to install a wide range of distributed generation technologies including solar, wind, biomass and small hydro, and improve the overall efficiency of the electrical grid. Building Code Discussion Paper
The Alliance has released its first discussion paper entitled Energy Efficiency in the Provincial Building Code [PDF]. This paper was developed in consultation with its members and provides background on efforts to enhance energy efficiency within other provincial building codes, as well as perspectives from various stakeholder groups.

Provincial Energy Strategy
In its Provincial Energy Strategy, the Government of Alberta reaffirmed its commitment to energy efficiency and conservation. The strategy specifically mentions:

    1. Smart metering and smart grids;
    2. Transit, fleet greening and vehicle emission standards;
    3. Building codes, renovation programs and LEED Silver or Gold for all government funded buildings; and
    4. Changes to municipal planning to increase urban densities.

AESO Demand Response Working Group
The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has formed a stakeholder working group to develop, evaluate and make recommendations regarding demand response programs within the existing mandate of the AESO. Those recommendations are intended to form a starting point for full industry consultation on the topic of demand response.  The primary objective of this project is to determine how demand resources can address/support market and system operations in a manner consistent with market objectives and guiding principles. Ultimately, the project will deliver rules and processes needed to remove barriers to demand response participation and facilitate fair, efficient and openly competitive outcomes.

BOMA BESt vs. LEED EBOM
Stantec delivered a presentation to the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) of Manitoba comparing two systems for measuring and certifying the environmental performance of buildings as they are operated - BOMA BESt and LEED EBOM. Not sure what the acronyms stand for? Check out the presentation [PDF] to find out, and to find out when each system is best used.
