Retrofit Vendors deliver Net Zero Fire Station for City of Edmonton

Windermere Fire Station 31’s net-zero design is achieved through a geothermal field with 35 boreholes for heating and cooling and a south-facing sloped roof with a 382-panel solar array with a rated capacity of 143kW.
The design required an integrated team to develop a high-performance building system, utilizing passive design techniques, such as the building envelope, daylighting, and natural ventilation.
The building envelope features R-35 walls, R-50 roof insulation and R-20 under-slab insulation. This envelope ensures minimal heat loss, eradicates thermal bridging, and contributes to the station’s energy-efficient operations. The side-folding bay doors open and close more quickly preserving warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer.
Stok’s LEED consultants guided this project through LEED certification and coordinated the NZE team to reach the 40/40/80 initiative, resulting in a high-performance building that demonstrates:
- 40% or greater energy efficiency than the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2011.
- 40% or greater greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction than the NECB 2011 reference building.
- <80 kilowatt hours per square meter (ekWh/m2) for annual heating demand for all non-office building archetypes.
Awards:
