Avenue Living SunRise Apartments
AEEA is proud to showcase Avenue Living’s leadership in sustainable building renovations with the support of AEEA Retrofit Vendor Chandos Construction.
Avenue Living is a leader in revitalizing multi-family housing across North America. The organization’s commitment to sustainability delivers long lasting benefits to its residents and the broader community. Their investment in the SunRise has transformed the high-rise apartment into a contemporary urban sanctuary, filled with natural light, comfortable suites, and convenient access in the heart of downtown Edmonton. Suites received LED lighting upgrades, updated bathrooms and kitchens, and new modern amenity spaces including a shared library, gym, roof top patio, pet grooming station, games and movie room, golf simulator, as upcoming new commercial spaces. The building also features onsite security, as well as 24/7 camera surveillance.
The 12-storey, 11,400 sq. ft. tower was originally built in 1970, and has been transformed into a modern, affordable, and energy efficient mixed-use building. The retrofit included significant abatement and remediation, mechanical and electrical upgrades, updated windows, and full building envelope improvements. The exterior upgrades focused on sustainability and Avenue Living partnered with Mitrex to install 2,000 panels of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) cladding to generate over 180 MWh/year of renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60%.
The innovative cladding solution also doubles as public art. Spanning the entire north face of the building, there is a striking 26-metre (85-foot) mural that now stands as the largest solar panel artwork, recognized by the Guinness World Records. The unique piece celebrates Edmonton’s diverse community, generates clean energy, reduces the building’s environmental footprint, and sets a new standard for sustainable living.
