Stantec Tower Achieves LEED Gold

A number of Retrofit Vendors collaborate to deliver the LEED Gold certified Stantec Tower in Edmonton. With the architecture, engineering, and commissioning services handled by professionals from across Stantec, the Tower showcases their expertise and is proudly LEED Gold Certified. PCL provided general contracting services.

Standing at 69 storeys (251 metres), Stantec Tower has elevated Edmonton’s reputation as home to the tallest high-rise in Western Canada, double the height of other towers in Edmonton. This generated engineering challenges that required caisson foundations built to a size that has never been constructed in the local marketplace.

A key component of the project was the two-meter transfer slab, a concrete structure with embedded structural steel located 137 meters above grade. The transfer slab is critical due to the weight of the building and helps stabilize the tower. It is the first above-grade transfer slab constructed in Edmonton.

To improve efficiency, PCL installed Job Site Insights™ (JSI™) smart sensors throughout the building to alert the team if any temperature fell below a set threshold. The sensors also alerted the team to humidity levels that could jeopardize the high-end millwork and hardwood in the suites. Using JSI™ brought peace of mind to site personnel and the client, who knew heat and humidity were always monitored. In addition, JSI™ helped save an estimated $370,860 by:

  • Reducing gas heater usage by 46% ($180,000 in estimated savings);
  • Reducing electric heater usage by 58% ($69,000 in estimated savings);
  • Rework avoidance ($171,860 in estimated savings)

Western Electrical Management (WEM) was chosen by PCL Construction to be the electrical contractor on this project which encompassed a 69-storey tower including 23 office levels, 37 residential levels, five mechanical levels and four levels of podium and a six-level below grade parkade.

WEM’s work required the installation of fire alarm life-safety systems, lightning protection, telecommunication systems, lighting/lighting controls, and electrical distribution systems throughout. Energy-efficient lighting, a LEED level lighting-control system, medium and low voltage power systems, high-end feature lighting in public spaces, a tenant-amenities floor, and an expansive patio on level 30, were just some of the unique features completed by WEM in collaboration with PCL Construction and other trade partners.

Stantec Tower is the largest Unitized Curtain Wall project in Flynn’s history. In addition to having a truly international supply chain, the project also had a wide variety of frame types and sequencing requirements.
