Peak Rewards Pilot
Peak Rewards Pilot
The Peak Rewards Pilot is a voluntary demand response initiative designed to help manage electricity demand during periods of high system need. By adjusting how and when electricity is used during these short, infrequent events, participants help support grid management while earning incentives for their participation.
The pilot program is administered by the Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance (AEEA) in collaboration with EPCOR, FortisAlberta, and established energy program delivery and technology partners. It offers two distinct participation pathways: one designed for households equipped with smart thermostats, and another targeted toward businesses and institutions. Each pathway is specifically tailored to address the unique requirements and capabilities of each group.
Choose Your Peak Rewards Program

Peak Rewards Pilot for Smart Thermostats
Designed for eligible residential and small business electricity customers, this stream allows participants to enrol an existing smart thermostat and take part in demand response events. During events, enrolled thermostats make small automatic, temporary temperature adjustments to help reduce peak electricity demand. Participants receive notifications and can opt out of any event at any time using their thermostat or app.
Why participate:
- Earn an upfront enrollment incentive and additional rewards for ongoing participation
- Continue using your existing smart thermostat
- Help support a more efficient electricity grid

Peak Rewards Pilot for Business
The Peak Rewards Pilot for Business is designed for commercial, industrial, and institutional customers with the ability to reduce or shift electricity use during peak periods. When a demand response event is called, participating organizations temporarily adjust operations or equipment usage. Incentives are performance‑based and reflect verified demand reductions during events.
Why participate:
- Receive financial incentives based on demand reductions
- Access flexibility strategies tailored to your facility
- Support system reliability and long‑term grid resilience
About Demand Response
Demand response is a proven, cost‑effective approach to managing electricity systems during periods of high demand. Instead of building additional infrastructure to meet short‑term peaks, demand response relies on voluntary, temporary reductions in electricity use by participating customers. These actions help maintain system efficiency and reduce overall system costs.
