Peak Rewards Pilot for Business
Flexible electricity. Real rewards. A stronger grid.
With the Peak Rewards Pilot for Business, customers are rewarded for shifting electricity use during periods of high demand.
Delivered in partnership with FortisAlberta, this small-scale, twelve-month pilot evaluates how certain eligible businesses can support grid resilience by reducing or shifting their energy use when demand is high. Participants are rewarded financially based on their average load reduction, and the findings will help inform long-term infrastructure planning.
The approach evaluated in this pilot is a type of ‘demand response’ (DR). DR programs are a practical application of ‘flexible load’, where businesses make voluntary brief adjustments to electricity use during peak demand hours.
How It Works
When electricity demand is high, a demand response “event” may be called. Enrolled businesses can then reduce or shift a portion of their electricity use. A Load Curtailment Plan is tailored to each business to mitigate operational disruption, and participants receive at least 24 hours’ notice prior to an event. Customers can always opt out of individual events or the full program.
Why Demand Response
Jurisdictions across North America are increasingly utilizing DR as it is widely recognized as a cost-effective approach to improving the reliability and efficiency of their electricity grids.
Businesses that participate in DR programs like this pilot can benefit from:
- Financial incentives, with no upfront or ongoing costs
- Operational flexibility, with strategies designed around your facility
- Improved long-term grid reliability
- Insight into when electricity demand is highest and how their energy use aligns with those periods
- A flexible opportunity to engage with new energy solutions as they evolve
This pilot is part of a broader DR demonstration by the AEEA and several Alberta distribution utilities, exploring the efficacy of these programs in an Alberta context.
Who will participate
The pilot is designed for larger commercial and light industrial customers connected to FortisAlberta’s distribution system with the ability to reduce or shift electricity use during peak periods. Eligible facilities may include offices, retail, manufacturing, warehousing, industrial facilities and multi‑site portfolios.
