Award winning Municipal Aquatic Centre reduces carbon emissions

Integrated Project Delivery of New Aquatic Centre
The Town proceeded in 2022 to engage with a number of Vendors in an Integrated Project Delivery method to build the new aquatic centre. While not in the original project budget, a waterslide (not initially viable) was added to the scope prior to completion of the facility. This was possible because of the budgetary success of the IPD project.
Due to its highly collaborative nature, this project saw the team mitigate a large portion of risk (long procurement times, inflation, trade availability) associated with the start and duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. The team’s quick action and planning delivered the project less than a percent over budget without sacrificing the design intent or quality. Using pull planning, the team realized that installing the solar panels earlier than scheduled would allow the project to sell power back to the grid during construction.
The team found that using a 304.32 kW solar PV system on the roof could generate up to 257,888 kW per year, reducing the municipality’s carbon footprint, offsetting about 147 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Additionally, the pool’s turn-down system reduces water and electricity usage, significantly improving the energy efficiency of the facility and lowering operational costs.
The project received an Award of Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of Alberta.
The project received significant funding from the federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and from the Alberta Municipal Solar Program through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.
