Frequently Asked Questions
- It’s a voluntary pilot for qualifying EPCOR customers and runs in partnership with the Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance (AEEA). The pilot helps reduce electricity use during peak summer periods.
- Throughout the summer, during peak demand events, your thermostat manufacturer may make small, temporary temperature adjustments to your enrolled smart thermostat. These adjustments help ease pressure on the grid at critical times.
- Most events will take place between June 1st – September 30th, with the possibility of a small number of events being called between December 1st – February 28th.
- Adjustments are limited to 3 degrees or less and last no more than 4 hours. Most events happen between 3–8pm MST.
- Participants will receive a one-time $50 virtual prepaid Mastercard® (limit one per household) after successfully enrolling in the program. You’ll also get up to a $25 Prepaid Mastercard each year you remain in the program and participate in events.
This pilot uses proven smart thermostat technology and a demand response program model that is widely used across North America. It explores how small, temporary adjustments to cooling during peak demand periods can help support a reliable and resilient grid. Your participation helps AEEA and its program partners evaluate innovative customer-centred solutions as part of broader grid modernization efforts.
- Yes. As part of the Peak Rewards Pilot, participants may be invited to complete short surveys during or after demand response event seasons. These surveys help the AEEA and its program partners understand participant experience, comfort impacts, and overall program performance.
- Survey responses are used to support program evaluation and improvement. Survey results are typically analyzed in aggregate and handled in accordance with the program’s privacy and data use policies.
This pilot is open to EPCOR electricity customers located in postal codes beginning with T6R, T6W, and T5E who have a central air conditioner or heat pump controlled by an eligible Wi‑Fi smart thermostat.

As long as you participate in 50% of events, you’ll receive a $25 Prepaid Mastercard before the next summer season. The $25 Prepaid Mastercard will be sent to the email address used to register your smart thermostat. Limit one per household.
No, the reward is limited to one per household. However, you’ll still be eligible for the $25 annual reward as long as your new thermostat qualifies you to remain in the program.
- During an event, your thermostat will be adjusted by up to 3 degrees above or below your current setting for no more than 4 hours.
- Sometimes, your thermostat may pre-cool your home before an event starts to help you stay comfortable — though this may not happen if the event is urgent. You’ll always receive a notification when an event is scheduled or underway, depending on your thermostat and settings. Pre-cooling or pre-heating may be used to increase comfort during an event.
Yes, absolutely. You’re always in control and can opt out of any event from your thermostat, mobile device, or web app. If you prefer not to participate in a particular DR event, you can simply change the temperature back to your liking (using the thermostat or its app). This will immediately opt you out for that event and you’ll remain in the pilot for future events. If you ever wish to permanently leave the pilot, you can do so at any time by contacting peakrewards@clearesult.com or 1-888-709-0607.
Only data needed to run the pilot is collected and used. This includes your contact information and some device and energy-usage data relevant to the Demand Response events. Your utility, and pilot partners will keep this information confidential and use it only for administering the pilot.
Trusted pilot delivery partners include:
Participants will receive a one-time $50 Virtual Mastercard® Prepaid Card (limit one per household) after successfully enrolling in the pilot. You’ll also get up to a $25 Virtual Prepaid Mastercard® each year you remain in the pilot and participate in events.
