Net Zero College Training Centre
A number of Retrofit Vendors collaborate to deliver a Net Zero Trades Training Centre for Northern Lakes College.
The facility is designed to be a living learning laboratory, and all mechanical, plumbing and electrical design, as well as HVAC systems, are designed as demonstration spaces to help educate students. The facility’s open/exposed walls for electrical and geothermal components serve as a teaching tool for students.
The campus achieved LEED Silver Certification in September 2022. The two-storey glulam structure uses natural, locally-sourced materials that contribute to the building’s stellar sustainability profile, and to the comfort and warmth of its interior environment. Spaces are open, bright, and flooded with natural daylight entering through clerestory windows. The building is designed to be Net Zero, utilizing a ground source heat pump – geothermal energy system of 35 boreholes, a distributed ground source water-to-air heat pump system, and a 360kW photovoltaic panel array. The envelope is designed to optimize the trade-off between the high-performance fiberglass curtain wall and the high-performance wall assembly to reduce energy demand, with a targeted annual energy demand of 360MWh per year.
